Roger:

He is the sadistic character that enjoys hurting other people for no reason. Throughout his life Roger was taught to control his impulses and conceal them, but under the irresponsible control of Jack he was able to let them go. When he was throwing rocks at the littlun he continuously missed because he was conditioned by civilization, but after joining Jack’s tribe and losing that conditioning he had no problem killing Piggy. He dehumanizes Ralph and Piggy by thinking to himself that they are just a “shock of hair” and “bag of fat”, which makes it easier for him to hurt them. Roger becomes the torturer of the group and has no problems with it. His role plays a large part in all dictatorships and aides the ruler in leading with fear.

Eric:

He is one of the few characters that remains mostly civilized throughout the novel. He easily submits to whoever is in charge and does what they say. They are intimidated by Jack and his power, but eventually abandon the group and join his tribe to avoid punishment. He represents the general public of society that easily conforms to the rules of who is in power. A role such as his is required in any society because the ones in charge need a following and support group. Without the “go with the flow” general public, the group in power would not be able to get things done or changed.
