Jack:

He is the books biggest savage. His lack of self control and need for power is influenced by his cultural background. Jack talks of how he was the leader of the choir, thus showing his leadership quality and desire for power. When he starts out on the island with little power he volunteers himself to be leader of the hunters in order to have some leadership. On the island the conditions are critical and they are under high pressure to survive. The boys get hungry for meat and decide to go hunting. When they do, Jacks conscious tells him not to kill the pig and the others seem to be mad. After this he kills a big and becomes obsessed with hunting. When he does his savagery comes out. Others start to follow Jack and feed into his influences. This relates to the real world by giving into peer pressure. Jack’s rules are much more savage due to his need for power and control. Lack of food and civilization make this boy more savage than he already is. By the end of the book Jack has many followers and uses his savagery and power to control the boys. Simon:

He is a shy but strong character. He treats the littluns as a big brother would treat them and makes sure they are taken care of. He has a brotherly instinct which most certainly could do with his cultural back round. Simon seems to have come from a place where you look out for one another. Simon is not like the boys in the choir who are unvoiced and only follow orders. The boys in the choir are relatively the same in their sense of culture due that they are from the same place and practice the same ideas. Simon seems to keep his sanity by sneaking off and eating food. This relates to other situations in life by people losing their minds when they have a lack of food. Simon is the most spiritual out of all of the boys and he keeps his head clear. He is the first one to realize the beast is no more than a corpse with a parachute. Simon is strong in the sense that he keeps his sanity throughout the novel before being brutally murdered.
