When other boys ask where it hides during the day he suggests that it hides in the water of the ocean. Jack attempts to assure the boys that if there is a monster him and the hunters will kill it. Jack runs away from the meeting and some boys follow him. Piggy urges Ralph to blow the conch to bring them back but Ralph fears that they would ignore it then there vestige of order will disintegrate. Piggy assures Ralph that the boys need his guidance than they go to sleep.

During the fight a dead parachutist gets stuck on the branch of a tree. When the boys wake up they find the dead parachutist and mistake the shadow for the monster. They immediately tell Ralph who calls a meeting at which the boys reiterate their claim. Frightened by the story, the boys agree to go out and look for the monster. The older boys, aside from piggy begin searching the island. The boys reach a part of the island that none of them have explored. Jack and Ralph find themselves in a cave.
