Chapter Summary 10: The chapter begins with Ralph and Piggy awakening from the previous night. They both feel guilty about the death of Simon. They seem to almost deny that it even happened. When Sam and Eric show up they all claim they took no part in it and left the dance early. They try to get a fire going, but it is weak and doesn’t produce enough smoke to signal where they are. They give up on making the fire because it is almost dark, and they can’t collect wood in the dark. In the night they think they hear Jack's tribe coming to steal the conch. They fight off whatever came, and decide to go take back the fire in the morning.

Chapter Summary 11: Ralph, Piggy, Sam, and Eric all are preparing to go to take the fire back. Ralph is angry at them because he says hey stole the fire. Piggy speaks up and thinks they should reason with Jack. Piggy at this point is tired of all the disputes, and wants to achieve peace. They go to Castle rock where Jack’s tribe is with Ralph leading piggy because his glasses have been stolen by Jack. The plan goes south, with Piggy being killed by a large rock. The conch is destroyed which seems to destroy any unity that was left. Sam and Eric are captured and forced to join the tribe. Ralph flees away from the scene injured.

Chapter Summary 12: That night Ralph gets to Sam and Eric’s lookout where they inform him that they were forced to join the tribe. A dance is going to get ready for a hunt after Ralph. Sam and Eric are still loyal and give Ralph a piece of meat. The next morning Jack's tribe begins to sweep the entire island in a line. Ralph hides near castle rock because he thinks he won’t be found as close to their gathering place. He hides in a thicket but still gets discovered. He is being chased by the entire tribe until he stumbles upon a British naval officer. The officer is confused why all the boys are painted, and is shocked to hear Piggy and Simon were killed. They are all terrified of what they have become when they are rescued because they have become savage and have killed two boys.

Questions:

-Why do you think Piggy is the one that steps forward and proposes peace instead of Ralph?

-Why do you think Jack is still angry even after Piggy proposes peace.

-When all the boys realize how Savage they have been, how does the death of Simon and Piggy affect them even more?
