Chapter Summary 7: In this chapter Ralph begins to show his true savagery. The boys decide they need food and go for a hunt up the mountain. The boys witness Ralph injuring a pig. With much excitement, the boys reenact the exciting battle of Ralph and the pig. During the process they get lost in their savagery, injuring and almost killing Robert. Robert suggests they use a real boar next time and they all laugh, gaining humanity again. Near the end of the chapter, few boys go and look for the beast. Roger, and Jack decide they want to go look for the beast on top of the mountain. After much persuasion, Ralph agrees to climb the mountain with them. It is there where they see the beast.

Chapter Summary 8: This chapter starts off with Jack and Ralph running away from the beast. Jack calls an assembly and talks of Ralph saying he is nothing but a coward. Jack talks of Ralph saying he is nothing but a coward and demands they vote for who they want as chief. At Jack's dismay, he looses the election and starts to let his emotions control him. He leaves and claims anyone who wants to join his new clan is welcome. Biguns start to disappear to Jacks clan making making Ralph nervous and upset. He tells the remaining people to build a fire in case they can be rescued and that the boys need to be smart and have order. While this is happening, Jack's clan kills a pig. They cut off the head of the pig and put it on a stick to offer it to the beast. Once this decision is made, Jack shows up to Ralph's clan and invites them all to a feast.

Chapter Summary 9: This chapter has the revealing truth about the beast. Simon goes to where the beast was spotted and realizes the beast was spotted and realizes the beast is no more than a corpse. He feels anxious upon this discovery, Ralph and Piggy join Jack's feast with the other boys. During the feast, Jack invites everyone to join the trive. Most join despite Ralph and Piggy's arguments against it. While the boys argue, it starts to rain and Ralph questions Jack's plan due to the fact they have no shelter. Jack distracts all of the boys by telling them to do the wild hunting dance. Simon emerges out of the forest with the corpse but they do no recognize them in their savage state. The boys kill Simon violently with their bare hand and teeth. When this happens, the storms get violent and boys take shelter while the wind carries the corpse in the air and Simon's cold dead body into the ocean.

Questions:

- Why do the boys continue to beat simon after he tries to explain he is not the beast?

- What are the differences between Jack and Ralph's feelings after the brutal killing of Simon?

- Why does Jack strive for control?

- Why do the boys continue to follow Jack with his arrogance and savagery?

- Where is Simon during the feast? What state of mind is he in compared to everyone else?

- Why do they see a beast at first instead of a corpse?
